I am currently in school for Holistic Nutrition and children’s nutrition ( especially my own children’s!) is very important to me! I recently had the privilege to review with my kids the Copy Kids Healthy Eating DVD. I have to admit that I was very shocked at how effective this DVD was with my toddler. What is Copy Cat Kids About?
Copy Kids is a wonderful DVD that is designed for kids to mimic what they see on TV. The DVD is broke into 12 seven minute clips. During these clips you see children of different ages eating different fruits and vegetables. The simple purpose of the DVD is to have your child “copy” what the child on TV is doing.
How my kids reacted to the DVD:
When I first received the DVD I noticed that it stated on the front that the DVD was for ages 6 month – 5 years old. My kids are 2 ( 3 in August) and 5 years old. When the DVD arrived I told the kids that it was for them. They were super excited and it immediately went into the DVD player.
I have to admit when the DVD arrived I was not able to sit down right away with the kids to watch the DVD. I was trying to get chores done around the house and had several things to do. Any time I review a DVD ,( especially if it is with the kids!) we watch the DVD several times.
I didn’t hear too much out of the kids the first time the DVD played, but I did notice my two year old running back and forth and checking out the contents of the refrigerator. The next day it was raining and I asked the kids if they wanted to watch a movie.
My 5 year old told me he wanted to watch the kids eat again. ( The Copy Kids DVD!) We turned on the DVD again. My kids were very enthusiastic about the DVD. Ian ( my 2 year old!) kept telling me I will eat that, and I want that every time he saw the kids on the DVD eating a new fruit or vegetable. In fact he would run to the fridge and pull out any of the fruits or vegetables that we had and eat them!
While we were watching the DVD I started asking my 5 year old if he would try different things. He looked at me and smiled and said ” Mommy I am 5 years old and I am not a copy-cat! I am a leader! You are trying to trick me!” And this is where our parenting advice to our 5 year old kind of bit us in the butt! Recently we had the conversation with my 5 year about being a leader not a follower and that his little brother is going to copy everything he does. Apparently 1 conversation stuck in his head!
My personal opinion:
I personally think this DVD is great for younger children. It had a huge effect over my 2 year! He did exactly what the DVD had intended. I have even noticed him trying new vegetables that he saw the other kids eating on the DVD. I think this would be a wonderful tool for daycare, schools and parents for children at a young age level.
I think my 5 year old was too old for the DVD. He is very set in his ways. He knows what he does and doesn’t like and remembers everything that we tell him. Because we had the conversation with him about being a leader, I that really influenced his thought of the DVD.
Would I recommend this DVD?
Absolutely! I think it is a great tool for parents to show their kids ( especially under 4!). My husband and I enjoyed the clips at the end where Dr. Jay spoke about children’s nutrition. It was very informative for parents and explained the purpose of the DVD!
